Midlands Development Team Funding for National Championships
Worcester 2008
Firstly let me thank the committee for agreeing to support prizes for the mini Hody event. As a reminder under 10 and under 12 paddlers compete usually on the Saturday of the event in Lightnings for National Championship medals. Under the rules of the National Championships there is no other event for this age group unless they wish to compete in under 14’s which is a very big step up.
Because most juniors of this age group like to be occupied and taking part rather than standing watching most organisers then arrange an event on the Sunday for these paddlers but there are no specific prizes set aside for this.
With all other classes receiving National Championship medals and no points being awarded from this race towards any team prize it is good to be able to provide a slightly different prize for this class so that they feel as thought their event is not just an “extra”.
22 crews entered so 44 juniors took part with 21 girls and 43 boys. Only one crew retired and times ranged from 16:57 minutes to 26:25 showing a good spread of ability amongst the participants.
The prizes awarded were as proposed:
Craft tops to the winners
Pogies to the second placed
Mugs to the third placed
And stickers were provided to all those who took part along with copies of our poster. These were very well received and we had enough stickers (150) for all those juniors irrespective of age who came to prize giving to have one or more stickers. Hopefully these stickers will be finding their way onto school books and posters onto bedroom walls where many other children will see them and generate some debate, discussion and interest in our sport.
Costs were:
Craft Tops £92.00
Pogies £40.00
Mugs £12.00
Stickers £82.25
Total £226.25
In terms of advertising for the Development team an advert was placed in the programme of which 400 were distributed for which other advertisers would have paid £50. I will try to get a copy of the programme and sticker to Stuart for you to see.
I very much hope that you will think that the money has been worthwhile. Without your fund we would have funded some sort of prizes but not with the same impact and certainly not the stickers which for future reference I believe were particularly successful.

Please take the time to read this email and to visit the River Access Campaign website . There has been an important development in the fight to gain better access torivers for canoeing and kayaking.
An "Early Day Motion" has been raised by theRt Hon Richard Shepherd, Conservative MP for Aldridge-Brownhills.
An "Early Day Motion", or EDM, is a motion put down ("tabled") by Members of Parliament calling for a debate on a particular subject. If enough MPs sign up their support for the EDM then it could be debated in parliament. The EDM reads asfollows: RIVERS ACCESS FOR NON-POWERED CRAFT 07.11.2005 EDM 957 raised by: Shepherd, Richard That this House urges the Government to extend legislation on access to the countryside to allow canoeists and users of other non-powered craft the same access rights as those provided for walkers; acknowledges that the most successful Olympic canoeing nation, Germany, requires land owners to tolerate the use of non-powered craft on their waterways; and appreciates that with increased access to waterways, there will be greater participation in canoeing leading both to obvious health benefits for the nation and to increased chances of future Olympic success.
Please take the time to write a short message to your MP urging them to sign upto the EDM. You can use the web site to find your MP and to send him/her a message on-line. It's very easy, all you do is enter your postcode and then let the web site guide you through the rest. Below is an example of the sort of message that might be sent.
Dear [MP name}
Re: EDM 957 River Access For Non Powered Craft
I would like to bring to your attention is that a new early day motion has been put to the House by Richard Shepherd (Con) MP for Aldridge-Brownhills.
The EDMreads as follows: That this house urges the government to extend legislation on access to the countryside to allow canoeists and other non-powered craft the same access rights as those provided for walkers in England and Wales; and calls on the government to provide greater access to waterways in England and Wales for non-powered craft; acknowledges that the most successful Olympic canoeing nation, Germany, requires land owners to tolerate the use of non-powered crafton their waterways; and appreciates that with increased access to waterways, there will be greater participation in canoeing leading both to obvious healthbenefits for the nation and to increased chances of future Olympic success.
Restricted Access to water has long been a problem for canoeists, and other watersports enthusiasts. In fact anyone wishing to participate in watersport is restricted to using rivers that have undisputed access or where restrictive permission has been granted. This means that we have no access to 98% of rivers in England and Wales. This situation is shown up as being extremely unfair when compared to the enormous freedoms enjoyed by other outdoor activities such as walking and climbing etc.
Please visit the River Access Campaign website for more information and please also give due consideration to adding your support to this EDM.
Yours sincerely,
Your name
Don't leave this to someone else to do. It is important that we all try to getour MPs to sign up to this. Don't let apathy get in the way of action! Please pass this on to all other paddlers you know too.
